Out on the promotional trail for The Mummy, Tom Cruise has let slip the title to the oft-delay follow up to 80’s classic Top Gun.

While speaking to Access Hollywood, Cruise, confirmed that he wanted to avoid the numbers convention of sequels, especially now as we’re on Mission: Impossible 6, and has instead plumbed for the title featuring his own character’s name, Top Gun: Maverick.

Despite that title, we can’t be too sure that the cocky pilot who had the need for speed will be the focus of the film, what with the ever-present rumour of drones set to ground the likes of Maverick and his Top Gun brethren, the hiring of Harold Faltermeyer on score duty, sees to suggest that we won’t stray too far from the originals tone.

Joseph Kosinski is the star's choice to direct (he directed Cruise in the Sci-fi thriller Oblivion) and there may well be a return engagement for Val Kilmer as Iceman.

Shooting is expected to kick off next year, so that looks like we’ll be heading to the danger zone in 2019.
