Burnout creator Criterion was working on an ambitious open-world extreme sports title that was to cover everything from jet skies to airplanes, but now it's cancelled.

Instead the developer who loves smashing cars at high speeds will instead be helping out more with Electronic Arts' Star Wars projects, mostly the Star Wars Battlefront series of which they already have a hand in; Criterion was a natural choice for speeder bikes.

They aren't just making things wot go fast either but are helping out with Star Wars Battlefront VR. Naturally this virtual reality project is a dream come true for Star Wars fans as they get to step into a galaxy far, far away and will help Sony budge PlayStation VRs.

"While Criterion has moved on from the previous project they've spoken about and aren't pursuing it specifically, they are continuing to build new ideas and experiment with new IP for EA," said the publisher.

"Criterion is also working on EA's Star Wars Battlefront VR experience, and contributing to other games from EA, for example the speeder bikes in Star Wars Battlefront."

Most recently Star Wars Battlefront expanded with the Bespin DLC add-on which adds the Cloud City and two new heroes to the mix; Lando Calrissian and bounty hunter Dengar. A massive patch has dropped alongside the latest DLC too.

Criterion's open-world project was announced back at E3 2015 and didn't yet have a title. Hopefully the studio can revisit the idea in the future. Former founders Fiona Sperry and Alex Ward meanwhile started Three Fields Entertainment and made Dangerous Golf.
