Today is Earth Day, so why not celebrate itby watching bits of it blow up in the brand new trailer for Independence DayResurgence.

Yep it’s the end of the world as we know it(again) although, things have changed considerably during the gap between invasions.

As the trailer shows, aside from a small band of alien holdouts – in the AfricanCongo, guerrillas have been fighting to wipe out stragglers –  most of the first wave of aliens was sweptaway 20 years ago.

The wreckage of alien City Destroyers
littered the planet – the trailer shows the broken hulk of one after destroying
Las Vegas - and 108 cities needed rebuilding. On the plus side, humanity now
has access to alien technolog y and Las Vegas has been destroyed.

But what of our heroes?

Will Smith is busy with the Suicide Squad,so it’s down to a younger cast to carry the burden of saving us poor mites from
flaming death.

Speaking of flaming death, it looks like Smith’s Col. Hillerbite the big one. According to the movie’s official website
reveals that Will Smith’s Steven Hiller died on 27 April, 2007, when an
"unknown malfunction” hit the alien hybrid jet he’d been testing.

Signing up to fight the good fight are TheHunger Games’ Liam Hemsworth, Boardwalk Empire's Travis Tope, Chinese starAngela ‘Angelababy' Yeung, It Follows’ Maika Monroe and newcomer Jessie Usher.
Judd Hirsch returns as Levinson's chess-playing dad Julius and Vivica A. Fox is
back as Hiller’s widow, Jasmine.

Hemsworth will play Jake Morrison, atearaway whose parents were killed in the first alien invasion, who grew up in
an orphanage and became a Maverick-style fighter pilot. Unfortunately, his
knack for flying by the seat of his pants saw him demoted to a posting on the
moon where we’ll find him driving a kind of astro-for klift, the Moon Tug.

"It’s kind of unlucky how he ends up in that ship,” explains Hemsworth."I think his ego kind of got in the way, he made a bad decision and putsomeone’s life at risk.”

Joining them will be veterans of the ‘warof ‘96’ Bill Pullman, who’ll be back as ex–President Whitmore, who is suffering
an alien occupation of his own. He's troubled by visions of a second
extra-terrestrial invasion.

Also appearing will be Jeff Goldblum who’llno doubt be bringing his knowledge of software viruses to the fold as what is basically
the ID4 universes equivalent of Bill Gates.

Goldblum’s David Levinson has been made
director of Earth Space Defense (ESD), and has been beavering away using the
technology to fix the environment, rebuild the planet and prepare a defence
against the aliens’ return.

Humanity now has alien-hyrid F-22 Raptors,
This, explains Goldblum, is “not exactly in my character’s sweet spot but
still, it’s what I’ve been doing for 20 years.” He’s also been in orbit. The
aliens aren’t going to be able to pull any of that hiding-behind-the-moon
nonsense again, because thanks to the ESD’s efforts, the moon has now been
weaponised.

With Whitmore out of the oval office, thetask of manning humanities response to the returning alien threat will fall toPresident Lanford. She's America's first female president and according to the
actress who plays her, CS: NY’s Sela Ward, she'll be "tougher, more
decisive, and more aggressive” Tougher than the man who nuked Texas? That’s a
bold claim.

 Maika
Monroe will play the new President’s daughter and love interest of Hemsworth's Morrison.

Another surprising name on the cast list isData himself, Brent Spiner who played Are 51 boffin Dr. Okun; why is that
surprising? Well he clearly died in the last film having suffered the indignity
of being an alien glove puppet before being tossed aside like a broken
rag-doll.

“Yes, the alien was inside me –
platonically, by the way – but what happens after that?” explained Spiner at
CinemaCon.

Probably something really confusing…
