It’s that time of year again where the great and good gather on the cote d'azur to celebrate all that’s good and grand in cinema…and to bid on the rights to Hyper-Mega-Lizardzord Vs Badgerdactal 2: The Re-spawning. It’s Cannes and that can only mean one thing, intense negotiations and announcements!

First up, Lionsgate has acquired North American and UK theatrical distribution rights to Monster Hunt 2, the sequel to the 2015 blockbuster that, for a time, was the highest-grossing film ever in China.

According to Deadline, the deal gives Lionsgate rights to the Monster Hunt property for its location-based entertainment venues in select territories. The film itself, which is currently in post-production, is directed by Raman Hui and stars Tony Chiu-Wai Leung (Hero), Baihe Bai (Chongqing Hot Pot) and Boran Jing (Time Raiders). The story picks up from the first instalment and sees the baby monster at the heart of the adventure having to pit itself against even more formidable enemies in both human and monster form.

It’s slated for release in North America and the UK day and date with its Chinese release during the Chinese New Year in February 2018.

Ahead of the festival itself, home entertainment and theatrical distributor Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired Suburban Cowboy – the crossover between Midnight Cowboy and Suburban Commando we’ve all been waiting for…oh, no wait it’s a gritty caper that follows a drug dealer on Long Island who finds himself over his head when one of his soldiers robs a connection to ruthless Serbian gangsters. When the debt falls on his shoulders he is forced to take drastic measures.

The movie is a collaboration between Ryan Colucci and Grammy-nominated EDM artist Dragan Roganovic (aka Dirty South).

And finally, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has acquired domestic physical and digital distribution rights to the Distant Horizon suspense thriller, Serpent.

Written and directed by Amanda Evans, the movie stars Sarah Dumont (Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse) and Tom Ainsley (Versailles) as a husband and wife on a romantic escape that turns deadly when they are trapped in a tent with a poisonous snake. Both Suburban Cowboy and Serpent have yet to receive release dates outside of the festival circuit.
