Disney Set to Reboot The Rocketeer

Get ready to blast off all over again as Disney looks ready to move on a sequel-reboot of The Rocketeer.

The project, which is in early stages of development and is called The Rocketeers, is looking to headline the movie with a black, female protagonist and Disney have already hired writers Max Winkler and Matt Spicer to get it off the ground.

Joe Johnston's 1991 original was adapted from Dave Stevens' 1980s comic by Danny Bilson, William Dear and Paul De Meo and starred Billy Campbell as Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot who stumbles across an experimental jet pack which lands him a whole mess of danger with mobsters, Nazis, Howard Hughes and the FBI.

The film was a loving throwback to the serials and pinups of the 1930’s and 40’s and has since taken on a life of its own.

In the new film, the high flying heroics will take place six years after the original film, where, after Secord disappears while battling Nazis, a new hero, a young African-American pilot will take on the Rocketeer mantle to stop an ambitious rocket scientist from nabbing the jet pack technology and altering the course of what will become the Cold War.

Disney have yet to confirm a release date or make any official announcement but, if done right, the project could really take off.
