Mafia III Locked At 30 Frames On PC, 'Higher Framerate Patch In The Works'

Trouble for rising Mafioso in New Bordeaux as 2K Games just-released Mafia III is shackled to a limiting 30 frames per second on PC. Other issues include multi-GPU support.

PC fans of the Mafia series were shocked to learn their fancy new romp in the series came with a low framerate, with developer Hangar 13 forced to quickly announce they have an internal patch at the studio "that includes 30, 60, and unlimited frames-per-second".

The community updates on the situation would suggest the consoles took priority over the PC version, as they made sure everything could perform at 30 FPS. This is considered a big no-no for PC gamers who prefer to tweak settings themselves to achieve framerates.

"We know how important having options that best suit your PC’s performance capabilities are. The team has been hard at work ensuring that Mafia III’s performance is consistent across all platforms, and right now the game runs at a solid 30 frames-per-second. We are currently working on an update for PC that will give players the option to play Mafia III at higher framerates."

A more recent update on the situation:

"We currently have a patch running here at the studio that includes 30, 60, and unlimited frames-per-second options in the video menu, among other improvements for the PC version of Mafia III. We’re verifying the patch now to ensure everything is working as expected. If everything goes well, we expect the update to go live this weekend."

At least they're not going the '30 frames-per-second is more cinematic' route that Ubisoft tried and embarrassed themselves with from Assassin’s Creed Unity, which was incidentally the most derided for terrible technical performance and game design decisions.

Mafia III releases on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 today - if you're thinking of buying it for PC you might want to hold off until after the weekend to see what develops.
