Here’s something to drive the tifosi wild – a movie of the life of Ferrari founder and motorsport icon, Enzo Ferrari, is heading our way and Robert De Niro is aboard to play the Italian racer/engineer.

Simply titled Ferrari, the film spanning 1945 to 1980s, a key period for the Scuderia, where Enzo went from racer to spearheading the teams meteoric rise in the ensuing years, is rumoured to be directed by Clint Eastwood with a script by his J. Edgar scribes Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson.

Speaking to Italian broadsheet, Il Messaggero, De Niro said: “It is an honour to tell the life of an extraordinary man who revolutionised the world of motor sport. The film will go into production soon, mostly in Italy, and has absolute priority over all my other projects.”

Putting up the cash, Triworld’s Gianni Bozzacchi (along with De Niro’s own Tribeca productions) has promised an ‘epic’ feel with a lot of the substantial budget going towards burning copies amounts of rubber.

A notoriously private man, Enzo has been the subject of a 2003 documentary, also entitled Ferrari, and a failed attempt to tell a similar tale from Heat director Michael Mann.
