Cameron Crowe Talks Up Say Anything Follow Up

You have to feel for Cameron Crowe. Along with the blow back from Sony’s email leak, the controversy surrounding the casting of Emma Stone as a quarter Hawaiian woman with a half-Chinese father in Aloha, and that films poor box office showing; he needs a hit and fast.

Aiming to stem the backwards slide, Crowe, the director behind Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire, may have devised a plan to bring back the glory days…quite literally, with a sequel to cult 80’s classic Say Anything.

Going beyond previous rumours that he’d be interested in a sequel, Crowe recently admitted to Film School Rejects that he’d been spending a lot of time thinking about the character of Lloyd Dobler (who was played to a tee by John Cusack back in 1989) – and now he has outlined his story.

Crowe said: “I’ve even thought about revisiting Lloyd Dobler, to write about a stage in life where you’re looking at parenthood, wondering about your choices, and reconsidering some of the choices you made in past relationships.”

It sounds right in Crowe’s ballpark – and with his love of writing for John Cusack, here’s hoping he can persuade his leading man to return. Say Anything remains a beloved classic – with its richly drawn characters, iconic moments and heart-warming story, it would take something special to recapture that magic. Here’s hoping a rejuvenated Crowe could pull it off; cinema is a poorer place without his unique voice.
