A new standalone virtual reality Vive headset has been announced by HTC who are lending their support to Google's Daydream platform.

While specifcs aren't yet available as to the capabilities of this new standalone HTC Vive, they do promise details will be coming soon and that the new standalone version will be out in 2017.

"We have been working closely with developers and consumers to define the best VR experiences over the past few years, and we are perfectly positioned to deliver the most premium standalone headset and user experience.  Vive’s standalone VR headset will provide a deeper and more immersive portable VR experience than ever before," posted HTC on the Vive blog.

It's believed a wireless solution for the current HTC Vive is in development either by HTC directly or through third-party support, which would help alleviate the troublesome bother of wires running everywhere. HTC is also itching to make the leap to standalone VR as quickly as possible lest they fall behind other pioneers in the market. The HTC Vive currently enjoys a 'premium' reputation amongst the options of VR headsets.

It's unlikely the standalone HTC Vive could match the graphical output of a PC and seems to be geared more toward 'casual' VR experiences such as less intensive gaming and media content. More could be revealed at E3 2017 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in June.
