The Purge: Election Year - Murder in the Free World in New Trailer

There’s no way James DeMonaco could have predicted the madness of this year’s election campaign but he and The Purge: Election Year are certainly leaning into its dystopian, nightmare vision for Americas future.

Building on the biting satirical edge of The Purge 2: Anarchy – as well as that films scope and ambition – all that’s missing is someone wearing a Donald Trump mask.

The annual event where all laws are relaxed and basically anything goes for 12 hours of murdering mayhem, certainly sounds controversial but outside of the killing streets, the law has come under stark criticism thanks to murder tourists – traveling murder fans who’ve come tokill in a different, entirely legal land.

And then there's the rising backlash, pointing out that it's usually used to target low-income people while the rich stay safe in their gated complexes. One such voice calling for an end to the annual chaos is senator Charlene "Charlie" Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell),who lost her family one Purge night and is running for president whilecrusading for the legalised crime spree's abolition.

Unsurprisingly, telling a bunch of murder fans not to murder results in more murder…and paints a very big target on Charlene’s back come this year’s Purge…

The pair are then forced to go on the run when someone on his staff betrays them...

Thank goodness, then, that she has Frank Grillo's tough nut running her security team. Its’s a welcome return too – Grillo’s former solider character added an exploitation ‘70’s vibe to proceedings and was a natural when it came to fighting his way through the madness surrounding him.  He’s a perfectanchor for this movie.
