Activision's latest Call of Duty instalment takes the action back to World War 2, trading in space lasers and drones for pineapple grenades and beachheads.

Release

Call of Duty: WWII releases on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 November 3rd, 2017.

A Closed Beta will run to those who pre-order and will initially take place on PlayStation 4.

Studio and Setting

This first-person trip back to the second World War is being handled by Sledgehammer Games, in collaboration with Raven Software. This continues the cycle of new Call of Duty projects from franchise creator Infinity Ward, who last released Infinite Warfare, as well as Treyarch which works on Black Ops.

WWII focuses on a squad during the closing year of the war between 1944 and 1945. It takes place in the European theater of the conflict as Allied forces secured their advance on Nazi fortifications and paved the way into Germany itself. The campaign will include operations taking place in the occupied territories of France, Belgium and across the German Rhine. The D-Day landing at Normandy is included.

The single-player campaign mostly bounces between two soldiers in the 1st Infantry Division. They are Private Ronald "Red" Daniels and Private First Class Robert Zussman, who is Jewish-American.

Health Hazard

Super vitality won't be a thing in WWII as health regeneration is switched off in the campaign. Instead players will need to turn to medics in-the-field to get patched up, as well as relying on your squad to receive more ammunition.

Permadeath also looms large over your campaign with squadmates actually able to die off and be absent the rest of the game, which is said to take an emotional toll on the surviving members leading to behavioural changes.

Multiplayer

Call of Duty games are arguably about their multiplayer for most fans who keep dropping back in. A multiplayer reveal is scheduled for E3 2017. Sledgehammer Games has announced a new 'social space' Headquarters feature, as well as divisions, War mode and a return to "boots-on-the-ground" action, which in gameplay terms means no wall-running, jetpacks or double-jumps. Just good old crouching, running and going prone.

The War mode is asymmetrical with Axis and Allies working together to take objectives, while the new social Headquarters will offer some down time between all the bloodshed, which is the game recognising that soldiers weren't always in the fight. WWII also employs a new class-based progression system.

Zombies

A feature that started out as gimmick and that now literally won't die. It has been confirmed that Call of Duty: WWII will have a zombies cooperative game mode similar to those found in Infinity Ward and Treyarch releases. This means it will have its own backstory with the Nazi regime desperate in the closing years of the war that they turn to reanimating the dead - the plot of many a B-movie.
