Heading out on the free love freeway, Ricky Gervais has found funding for his David Brent movie, Life on the Road, reports Digital Spy.

BBC Films and Canadian company Entertainment One have provided financing for the mockumentary, which will follow the deluded Brent as he embarks on a self funded UK tour.

Brent himself hopes the subsequent film will carry the same magnitude as 'Scorsese shooting the Rolling Stones'.

Announcing the project's funding, Gervais said: "I'm so excited that the world will see what David Brent is up to now and where his future lies.

"This film delves much more into his private life than The Office ever did, and we really get to peel back the layers of this extraordinary, ordinary man."

Gervais revisited the character numerous times since The Office ended in 2003; in 2013 he appeared in a Comic Relief special and then launched a YouTube channel with David Brent 'Learn Guitar' videos shortly after.

He also went on to take David Brent on the road playing gigs in character with the band Foregone Conclusion, performing classic tracks from the TV series and new Brent songs.

Life on the Road will be released in cinemas summer 2016.
