Denis Villeneuve in Talks to Direct Dune

Not content with blowing minds with the first teaser trailer for Blade Runner 2049, Arrival director Denis Villeneuve is in talks to bring another iconic sci-fi franchise to the big screen in the form of Frank Herbert’s epic space opera Dune.

For years Paramount have been trying to add a little spice to the stalling adaptation, with names like Peter Berg and Pierre Morel attached before moving on again. Paramount’s right to Dune lapsed and proclaiming that fear is the mind-killer, Legendary pick up the ball.

Their deal with the Frank Herbert estate allows the development of both movie ideas and TV shows based on the struggles of the Atreides family and the war for control of the desert planet Arrakis, home to both a valuable "Spice" that allows interstellar travel and deadly sandworms.

Needless to say, Dune is a huge undertaking – one that has, so far, felled both David Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky and the Sci-Fi channel whose CGI affair now looks horribly dated – but, if Legendary are committed to really exploring the Duneiverse as no one is calling it, then expect to see multiply movies and spin-off shows for years to come.

If the Blade Runner teaser is anything to go by, if anyone is up to that challenge, it’s Villeneuve.
