A Quinn solo project is on the way but – inan interesting twist – it won’t just be a Harley Quinn standalone movie. Oh no,she’ll also be working a host of female DC heroes and villains, with names suchas Batgirl and the Birds of Prey surfacing.
The Hollywood Reporter have let slip thatwith months to go before Suicide Squad launch their assault on cinemas, Warner
Bros. is already contemplating a spinoff for the DC Entertainment with Margot Robbie reprising her role as The Jokers squeeze.
Playing to DC’s obvious strengths when itcomes to its stable of female heroes and villains, details are being closely
guarded but names such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey have surfaced, although in
what capacity, it’s not clear. Warner Bros. isn’t commenting.
There is also a scribe penning the script
but those details, too, are being kept secret, although it is known that the
writer is female.
DC itself have a healthy female readershipwith such recent titles as recently introduced DC SuperHero Girls, a line ofcomics and products targeting the young female demographic. The characters
getting the spotlight include Quinn, Batgirl, Batman villainess Poison Ivy,
Katana (Quinn’s fellow member of the Suicide Squad) and Bumblebee, who can fly
Shadowy sources are saying that the projectoriginated with Robbie herself, who, in her preparation for the role dove deep
into comic lore, fell in love with DC’s female characters, sourced a writer and
presented it Warner Bros. who, sensing a good thing, immediately said ‘yes’.
So who could join Harley Quinn in herstandalone movie?
The obvious candidate is Quinn’s Suicide
Squad co-star Katana aka Tatsu Yamashiro but her comic book incarnation has
previously served on a number of comic book teams, including the Outsiders and
Birds of Prey. An emotionally withdrawn warrior and martial artist, her sword
contains the soul of her dead husband.
Then there’s Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl whowas rumoured to have been played by Jena Malone before the part was cut from
Batman V Superman. The founding member of the Birds of Prey, Gordon created the
team while side-lined from action after being shot by the Joker; in the guise
of "Oracle," she gathered together a group of previously unconnected
operatives who could work under her direction to help her continue to fight
Or how about Poison Ivy? She served as oneof the Gotham City Sirens and has been a member of the Birds of Prey before her
fellow Birds discovered she was manipulating them for her personal needs.
Suicide Squad is set for release on August 5th.
