Pushing Tom Cruise towards new and interesting characters, Doug Liman – who directed Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow – has once again given us a new facet to the Cruiser with American Made, which sees the action star flying high as a charismatic drug smuggler.

Playing fast and loose with history, Cruise stars as Barry Seal, a pilot for TWA in the 70’s who lost his job when he was caught flying plastic explosives from Miami to Mexico for an anti-Castro group. He subsequently went solo as an aviation consultant, and began a lucrative second career smuggling cannabis and cocaine between South and North America, eventually getting entangled with the notorious Colombian Medellin Cartel.

When he was caught, he made deals with the CIA and DEA to continue his activities as an informant and spy, brushing shoulders with the likes of Pablo Escobar and Jorge Luis Ochoa Vasquez.

Originally called Mena, the story has been streamlined by the pair, along with writer Gary Spinelli, taking the key elements and fashioning them into what looks to be a rollicking true crime tale.

Co-starring Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Jesse Plemons, Lola Kirke and Jayma Mays, American Made lands in UK cinemas on 25 August before reaching the States on 29 September.
