Horror manga Death Note has been in development for a while but, thanks to an injection of interest of Netflix, the movie adaptation is on its way and now here’s the first trailer.

For those not in the know, the movie is adapted from Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s work which focuses on Japanese high school student Light Yagami, who comes across a notebook penned by the death god Ryuk, which allows its owner to kill anyone he pleases by writing their name in the book and picturing their face. Deciding to use his newfound power to rid the world of evil, the series follows Light and the cops who don’t take too kindly to all the murder in his altruism.

Hoping to dodge the same concerns that dogged the adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, the film stars Nat Wolff as Light Turner, with William Defoe as the cackling death god Ryuk. Co-staring Margaret Qualley, Lakeith Stanfield, Masi Oka and Shea Whigham, Death Note is directed by Adam Wingard.

Death Note hits Netflix on 25 August.
