Everything We Know About Call Of Duty 2017

With Activision taking Call of Duty from two developers to three - Infinity Ward, Treyarch and now Sledgehammer - a new entry is already well underway.

Fall 2017 is expected.

Time Warp

Rumour has 2017's Call of Duty taking place between 1955 and 1975.

Currently there's a significant possibility (IGN Spain) that Sledgehammer Games will be going with a game set some time around the Vietnam War. They've already dealt with this period before with Black Ops but having taken it on directly, and instead went off on a world-stomping adventure. The Vietnam conflict was just a backdrop in Black Ops.

Other notable conflicts during that period involving United States or Europe:

• Bay of Pigs Invasion (Cuba) - '61

• Laotian Civil War (involved North Vietnam) - '54 to '59

• First Sudanese Civil War - '55 to '72

• Suez Crisis - '56

• Congo Crisis - '60 to '65

• Dhofar Rebellion - '62 to '76

• Korean DMZ Conflict - '66 to '69

While it could focus on the Vietnam War it doesn't mean it would necessarily deal with the primary conflict but could instead look to one of its 'spin-off' conflicts. They also could side-step it for the 'Second Korean War' that happened in the mid to late 60s. There are plenty of squabbles to pick from during the time period that is rumoured.

With Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare blasting off into space this year Activision won't want anything taking away the spotlight. We'll have to wait probably until E3 2017 before they'll show off the newest member of the Call of Duty extended family.

One thing is for sure: fans aren't liking this race into the future that Call of Duty has become synonymous with. The past instalments in the franchise have gone from its World War 2 roots to science fiction super-soldiering and now literally blasting off into space with colonial militia dust-ups on Mars. It's perhaps time to ground the series back on Earth and during conflicts that have been steeped in pop culture so fans can relate again.

The Game That Never Was

Sledgehammer did work on an interesting third-person shooter project - aptly named Call of Duty: Vietnam - set during the Vietnamese conflict, but the project was eventually shelved. Could they have revived that or at least salvaged the setting and action for a more traditional first-person COD?

Allegedly this game would have been taking place in Cambodia and Laos in the 60s and 70s. Sledgehammer's Glen Schofield has said if they ever got a greenlight for a third-person COD then it would be this project they would revive.
