There'll be no Jack Bauer in the returning 24 TV series, or at least not a Kiefer Sutherland version, as Fox confirms the actor has 'moved on' and won't be part of the project.

They did approach the expert on in-the-field terrorist torture, but Sutherland turned the role down. "...it isn’t something he wants to do at this point, but he encouraged us to continue and look for a way to bring the show back," said Gary Newman of Fox.

“It would not surprise me if it’s a total reset in terms of the characters,” he continued. This could mean the writing team are taking the opportunity for a total overall of 24 and jettisoning the baggage of the past series, which had many twists and turns.

The last release was in 2014 with 24: Live Another Day. It was a mini-series set in London where Jack Bauer comes out of hiding to tackle terrorists, and is hunted by US forces dispatched by US President James Heller. Actor Stephen Fry played the British Prime Minister.
