Nvidia Launch 3GB Model GeForce GTX 1060, Lower Entry Tagged At $200

The GPU arms race continues as Nvidia has unleahsed a cheaper model of the GeForce 1060 that halves the RAM count from 6GB to 3GB. It has a lower MSRP of $200.

This surprising addition is likely in response to AMD's rival 4GB Radeon RX 480 offering. The new GTX 1060 sees not only its RAM count dropped but also its CUDA cores from the original's 1280 to the GTX 3GB model's 1152. It's said to impact performance 5%.

Fancy math wizardry suggests that means around 3 frames per second are lost with the new GTX 1060 compared to the full version. It's also going to have a noticeable impact on anyone gaming at 1440p as the 3GB RAM will be working flat-out quickly, and that's in spite of Pascal.

While the RAM and CUDA cores drop, other specs of the 3GB 1060 match it's bigger brother. Its base and boost clock speeds are 1.5GHz and 1.7GHz respectively, its memory speed enjoys 8Gbps with 192-bit bandwidth, and it will guzzle down 120W of juice.

“The GTX 1060 3GB is about 10 percent faster than the AMD RX480 8GB,” Nvidia told PC World. The GTX 1060 3GB is there to compete with AMD's equally priced 4GB RX 480, but apparently can 'best' AMD's dearer 8GB RX 480. Only benchmarks will settle that claim.
