First Trailer for Bittersweet Comedy Last Flag Flying

Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne co-star in bittersweet road trip movie, Last Flag Flying, directed by Boyhood’s Richard Linklater and based on the sequel novel to 1973’s The Last Detail, which was turned into a movie starring Jack Nicholson.

In the film, former medic Doc Shepard (Carell) meets up again with his old friends – brash ex-Marine Sal Nealon (Cranston) and Reverend Richard Mueller (Fishburne) – to transport the body of his son, a Marine who was killed in the Iraq war, back home.

Linklater’s film is not an official sequel to the 1973 movie The Last Detail, as the characters’ names and bios have been changed; instead, the film stands as a sort of spiritual successor to Ashby’s film.

If that description sounds overly grim this well-made trailer does a fine job conveying a bittersweet humour that more than once scores genuine laughs, and perhaps even some award-winning potential too.

Linklater and author Darryl Ponicsan collaborated on the screenplay, based on Ponicsan’s novel.

Last Flag Flying will world premiere September 28 at the New York Film Festival, then open in select theatres November 3.
