Alongside the mainstream Hillman Imp, Rootes also launched sportier versions of its small car. The Singer version, from 1964, was dubbed the Chamois and followed the usual marque policy of walnut veneer inside and extra brightwork outside, including, from 1968, quad headlamps. All models had chrome grilles at the front, for appearance’s sake only since the Chamois was rear-engined. Still, it looked good. In 1966 a Sport version was launched. It had a 51bhp engine instead of the standard saloon’s 39bhp. From 1967, there was also a pretty fastback Coupé.
