Before WW2, most Rolls-Royces had been large and imposing chauffeur-driven palaces on wheels. But the world was changing, and Rolls-Royce felt the need to change with it. Thus the Silver Dawn was a more compact Rolls, aimed at owners who also drove themselves. It was based on the Bentley MkVI. Engines were less powerful than their Bentley counterparts, and Rolls-Royce never let on the power output figures, at least not to the public. Most cars had standard Pressed Steel bodies, but there were some coachbuilt specials – some more special than others.
