For its first attempt at a Golf rival, Renault decided to use a transversely-mounted Douvrin four-cylinder engine shared with the Peugeot 104. Although it made for good economic sense and fine packaging, Renault dealers and buyers weren’t keen on buying what they saw as a half-breed. The idiosyncratic styling also soon lent itself to the unflattering name of the ‘rotten pear’ – which tells you all you need to know. But for all that, the 14 wasn’t actually that bad at all, especially in go-faster TS form, and it’s an interesting curio – albeit one that is near extinct in the UK.
