Renault’s new mid-sized saloon was designed to bridge the gap between the 8/10 and the 16. The smaller car’s rear engined layout gave way to a far more orthodox (in future years) longitudinal front-driver. For a 1969 saloon, this was almost state of the art, as was the near-fastback styling, which hinted at a hatchback layout. Built in various locations, most notably in Turkey and Romania, where the Dacia pick-up version remained in production until 2006. Very few 12s survive in the UK (or France, for that matter) – rust and mechanical fragility were its weaknesses.
