Porsche’s intended replacement for the 911 may not have achieved that goal, but it wasn’t for lack of performance or technological wizardry. An alloy V8 was attached to a rear-mounted gearbox and clothed in a galvanised body with aluminium doors and bonnet and body-coloured plastic bumpers – pretty radical for 1977. The original 4.5-litres was upped to 4.7 for the 300bhp 928S in 1982. Two years later, higher compression and a new fuel-injection system saw that rise to 310bhp in the 928 S2, which also offered ABS as an option for the first time on a Porsche.
