MG’s first post-war saloon car had plenty of pre-war style and panache, although it lacked genuine performance. But the good value four-seater saloon proved a mainstay in the range while the T-types continued to evolve. The Y-type’s engine was shared with its open-toppped cousins – the single-carburettor version of XPAG TC engine (46bhp at 4800rpm). New to the saloons was independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and bolt-on disc wheels. Various open and closed model variations were introduced, although few remain.
