This unit-construction sports two-seater, developed from the Austin-Healey Sprite, was MG’s most successful badge engineered model. It was initially powered by the BMC A-series 948cc, twin-carburettor, four-cylinder, ohv engine, and featured a four-speed gearbox, rack-and-pinion steering and independent front suspension. A hoot to drive despite the low power output, although the arrival of the 1098cc version helped. Disc brakes were added in 1962, before becoming the MkII in 1964 – with wind-up windows. MkIII upgunned to 1275cc.
