In 1981, Maserati model development took a new direction. The supercar market was surrendered to Ferrari and Lamborghini as the company chased volume with its new BMW 3-Series rivalling Biturbo. At the heart of the new car was an elegant new three valves per cylinder quad-cam 2-litre V6, which pushed out 180bhp thanks to its brace of turbos. The interior was plush – and its centrepiece clock was a real novelty. It was an interesting new direction, although big sales were never forthcoming. The four-door 425, introduced in 1983, added appeal.
