The story follows an orphan girl named Riko who, along with her robot friend Reg, seeks to find her missing mother who was one of the last notable explorers of a giant hole deep in the Earth called The Abyss. The Abyss contains artifacts and remnants of a civilization long gone and is a popular hunting spot for Cave Raiders. Those who enter the cave can also experience a curse or malady, one that manifests more acutely the deeper one has gone.
