Set in Normandy, France. When Emma (Mia Wasikowska), a farm girl, marries Charles Bovary (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), a wealthy doctor to secure her future and to leave her father's pig farm, she finds herself having to pretend she is happy with her mundane life. Tired of pretending, she starts to have extramarital affairs that momentarily give her happiness but ultimately further her depression.
