It started life as a Bertone concept car in 1970, but the Lancia competition director, Cesare Fiorio saw something in the squat little wedge that no one else did: a potential rally car. Fiorio knew that the Dino V6 engine from Ferrari was now within his grasp. A plan was hatched, and within three years, a production version was released (and 500 built), while the rally car was developed from it. From this inspired idea, Lancia’s domination of world rallying ensued. Road versions were hard to sell, and some languished in showrooms, unsold, for up to five years.
