From legendary director Pedro Almodóvar and based on short stories by Alice Munro, JULIETA is ‘Exquisite’ (Time Out), ‘Terrifically entertaining’ (NME), ‘Almodóvar’s best since Volver (Little White Lies). Julieta is a teacher of fifty five. She writes a long letter to her daughter, Antía, trying to explain all the things she has kept secret from her over the last 30 years. When she has finished her confession, she doesn’t know where to post the letter. Her daughter abandoned her when she was eighteen and Julieta hasn’t heard from her in the past twelve years. She has searched everywhere, but now realizes that Antía has become a total stranger to her.

Julieta is a timeless and mature examination of femininity and guilt that marks a return to form for director Pedro Almodóvar.

“Julieta,” Almodóvar’s 20th feature and his best, in my view, since “Volver” a decade ago, is a film of such quietly assured mastery that it reminds you American cinema today ha...

The real thrust of the film, however, is sorrow, not suspense, a fact perhaps best demonstrated by Alberto Iglesias‘ standout score.

Back in the heyday of the Hollywood studio, Julieta would have qualified as a “woman’s picture,” a female-centric melodrama with weepy overtones.

Little of this is unappetizing, of course. Riffing on Spanish telenovelas, Hitchcock, and film noir, Almodóvar and his production team have put together a slight, but undeniably...
