Although the Hassan-designed V12 impressed in the E-type Series III, it found its true home in the larger XJ bodyshell. With up to 300bhp in the later versions, it offered dominant performance and up to 150mph in the right circumstances. The XJ12’s mechanical smoothness could be its undoing as age and unreliability took hold – engines could drop a cylinder or two without being too noticeable, while the complex suspension set-up could break the odd bush here or there without the driver feeling a thing. Engine and body restorations are expensive.
