Because the XJ6 was still years away from making it into production, Jaguar decided that it needed an intermediate model to plug the gap between the Mk2 and the enormous MkX. Using the Mk2 as a starting point, the company created the S-type by adding the MkX’s Independent rear suspension and extended rear end as well as improving its interior. The end result was a luxury sports saloon which actually drives better than the car it was based upon, extending the life of the Mk2 platform really quite usefully.
