Jaguar really went for it when devising a flagship to replace its MkIX saloon. Physically huge and easily capable of seating six, the MkX was far more agile than its corpulent footprint implied, especially in 3.8-litre manual form. All cars had power assisted steering as standard and all-round disc brakes with servo assistance. The torquier 4.2-litre engine arrived in 1964 and made the MkX even more effortless; then it became the 420G in 1966. A few limousines were built, but the car lived on to form the basis of the DS420 limousine, favoured by mayors all over Britain.
