Following hot on the heels of the Fiesta, Ford’s 1980 Escort, codenamed ‘Erika’ during development, was a FWD move into the 1980s. New CVH engines, chiseled styling incorporating a stylish tailgate ‘bustle’ meant it was a major step forward from the Mk2, which was still rooted in the ‘60s. Cooking Escorts suffered from terrible ride and damping issues, but these problems were soon ironed out, and when the Cortina went out of production, it took the top spot in the UK sales charts. Surprisingly rare now, except in fast XR3 and RS form.
