The Consul Classic was one of the prettier cars ever built by Ford in the UK. While the saloon just looked clumsy and fussy, the coupé was svelte and elegant. Unfortunately, performance didn’t live up to the looks, although the Capri GT of 1963 managed to squeeze 78bhp out of its twin-carburettor 1498cc engine, meaning 95mph flat out. Out of the total production run of 18,716, a mere 2002 were GTs though. Ford would revive the Capri name in 1969, with much more successful results, but these original Capris are now much sought after.
