Well-engineered replacement for the 124 was built at Fiat’s Mirafiori factory, hence the name it adopted in export markets. Conventionally engineered with rear-wheel drive and a range of single- and twin-cam engines, the 131 was perfectly conceived for the Cortina/Cavalier market. Typically, a huge seller in Italy and mainly overlooked elsewhere. The most memorable version is the twin-cam Supermirafiori model that hit the market in 1978 – although it was not the caged tiger adverts hinted at – but most have succumbed to rust and the engine donor brigade.
