Advanced saloon that outshone and outsold the MkI Escort. With disc brakes all round and a rear axle well located on coil springs it’s a capable driver. Has suffered in classic terms from the usual Fiat rust problems, but mostly by growing up to become the long-running heart of the Lada range. Revvy overhead-valve engines are even impressive in base 1200 form, but the Special T is the one to have. UK available from 1971, this used a 1438cc twin-cam engine, upgraded to 1600cc from 1973.
