Austin’s first step into the brave new world of flush-mounted headlamps and front-hinged doors was a raging success with over a quarter of a million built. It’s also notable for first using what would come to be known as the BMC B-series engine, here in its smallest capacity. There’s still a separate chassis with hydromechanical brakes, but independent front suspension makes it a decent drive. Dorset is merely a two-door version of the Devon, nearly all of which went for export. More hot-rodded than standard examples survive in the UK.
