The Speed 20 was the first British car to have an all-synchromesh gearbox, although it was fitted only to the later SB, SC and SD variants. The engine was a development of the 20hp unit found in the older Silver Eagle cars, but the triple Weber carburettor set-up and other modifications gave 87bhp, an additional 15bhp. The heavier chassis, along with a new luggage compartment, dulled performance considerably, although the top speed of 89mph was more than competitive. The Speed 20 cemented Alvis’s reputation for comfortable cruising.
