David Beckham Signs For Guy Ritchie's King Arthur Movie

Back of the net! David Beckham – footballing ambassador, underwear sprinter, husband of a Spice Girl and potential Knight of the Round Table - will cameo in Guy Ritchie’s first of six planned King Arthur films.

In the first movie, suitably titled Knights of the Round Table, staring Charlie Hunnam, Eric Bana, Jude Law and Annabelle Wallis, Film Divider reports that film will feature a variation on the scene where Excalibur is drawn from the stone, and that is ‘where Beckham factors in’.

Quite what he’ll be doing at the de-stoning is anyone’s guess: perhaps he’ll be chanting like a football fan ‘Who are ya! Who are ya! King Arthur!’ or maybe he’ll be playing the live action version of Archimedes, Merlin’s crotchety Owl from The Sword in the Stone. He may even have to push the pram-a-lot. Only time and common sense will tell.

Film Divider adds: “There were some football puns written for this scene. And there’s a little bit of a sense that Beckham’s character, who fancies himself a big player in this story, gets a little ticked off when this other fellow, this upstart, is the one who can free the sword.”

This isn’t the first time Ritchie and Beckham have worked together. The pair collaborated on a short for H&M’s Spring Collection in 2013 which featured Beckham running around in H&M budgie smugglers.

Ritchie also directed an ad for Beckham’s own brand of whiskey, Haig Club, that was cleared by Advertising Standards for sailing at little too close to the wind when it came to glamorising alcohol. I can't imagine why they'd think scenes of well- dressed, immaculately styled, sexy young glamour-pusses, enjoying finely matured whiskey in picturesque locations in their own, sexy, sexy way would in anyway suggest alcohol was the gateway drug to the kind of coolness that makes Frosty reach for a winter coat is beyond me.

As for the cameo – like the best ones – it works when it’s least expected and the casting is so leftfield that it just might surprise anyone who has read this and several hundred other articles on the same subject…my bad.

Anyway, you can see for yourself when Knights of the Round Table is released on July 22nd 2016.
