Denis Villeneuve is currently in negotiations to direct the sequel to Blade Runner, but up until now it's only been rumoured that Harrison Ford would return to play Rick Deckard, but we're happy to reveal that this has now been confirmed; Ford is returning to Blade Runner.

Alcon Entertainment currently own the rights and are behind the production of the movie, while Ridley Scott, who directed the iconic 1982 sci-fi original, is aboard as an executive producer. The film should start principal photography in the summer of 2016.

“We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on Prisoners,” Kosove and Johnson said. “Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”

Blade Runner 2 will be set several decades after the 1982 film, which was based on the Philip K. Dic novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? We currently estimate that the film will be released towards the end of 2017, but we'll keep you posted.

Are you happy that Harrison Ford is coming back to play, what we assume will be the lead role, of Rick Deckard?
