Disney Orders Reshoots for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
A long time ago (well yesterday) in a galaxy far, far away (well LA) shadowy insiders have revealed that Disney are to begin expensive reshoots this summer on the reportedly troubled Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One.
The news comes after the New York Post claimed the film, which is set before A New Hope, was in crisis and needed an additional four weeks of filming where, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the aim will be to “lighten then mood, bring some levity into the story and restore a sense of fun to the adventure”.
The decision was made after the film was screened for Disney executives who felt the militaristic tone and gloomy visuals clashed with the familiar Star Wars sense of adventure.
“This is the closest thing to a prequel ever,” a source tells THR. “This takes place just before A New Hope and leads up to the 10 minutes before that classic film begins. You have to match the tone!”
Director Gareth Edwards, who helmed Monsters and Godzilla, will head back into shooting around mid-June in order to meet the films December release date.
Star Wars was reintroduced to audiences by Disney with The Force Awakens, which received spectacular reviews and grossed over $2 billion dollars worldwide.
Sources have also claimed that while Edwards cut is solid enough, it doesn't measure up to the kind of cross-generational appeal of J.J Abrams movie.
“Anything less than extraordinary won’t do,” says a studio insider.
Reshoots are nothing new. Most tent pole movies require some form of tinkering in order to iron out any issues with special effects – the more dependent the film is on its effects to generate spectacle, the more likely the need for additional shooting. There might also be a need to clarify plot or fix a performance (most actors have a reshoot clause in their contract - commonly known as a 'Run of Show' stipulation).So there’s nothing really to panic about just yet.
