Does Gotham 'Ghosts' Trailer Finally See Jerome Become The Joker?

There’s been an absence in Gotham city and it’s not the Batman. As the show crawls  on towards the rise of the Dark Knight – with villains being formed practically every week – it’s down to Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) to keep the mean streets in order.

So far, he’s tackled Oswald Cobblepot (the Penguin), Edward Nygma (the Riddler), Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Ivy Pepper (Poison Ivy) to name a few. However, there’s one of Batman’s rogue’s gallery who’s yet to make his presence known…it’s the clown prince of crime himself, The Joker.

The only one that ever came close was Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan), though the character died at the beginning of season 2 more than a year ago. Ever since he was killed, copycats have emerged – mimicking his distinctive laugh and penchant for crazed madness – promising to fulfil his death wish of descending into chaos.

However, a new trailer for this week’s midseason return of Gotham teases that Jerome may not be as gone as everyone thought. It seems that Jerome has defied death and he’s crazier than ever.

The character will reportedly stick around for a three-episode arc, before the show goes back on hiatus until April.

According to executive producer John Stephens, he’ll also be even more unhinged: “Someone who has basically gone through death and come back to life has a very different point of view. … It’s odd to say he’s more psychotic than he was before.”So just how does Jerome defy the reaper and does that mean he’ll become the man who laughs?

Gotham returns on Monday with ‘Ghosts’ at 8pm on FOX.
