Why are we trying to colonise Mars? It's full of demonic Hell legions! In their continued public service announcement of this scientific fact, id Software launches DOOM today.

The situation couldn't be simpler: You're a DOOM Marine and you're going to the Union Aerospace Corporation’s huge research facility on Mars and wiping out every last demon. The pioneers of first-person shooting are back with their most iconic creation.

"...DOOM returns as a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience. Relentless demons, impossibly destructive guns, and fast, fluid movement provide the foundation for intense, first-person combat – whether you’re obliterating demon hordes through the depths of Hell in the single-player campaign, or competing against your friends in numerous multiplayer modes."

A full single-player campaign is awaiting would-be DOOM Marines to beat and it's full of weapon and armour upgrades, secrets to be found and gutsy finishing moves to unleash. Also there's none of that 'taking cover' or 'stopping to regenerate health' nonsense - just corridors and rooms full of things that want to kill you.

There's also multiplayer for those who prefer more arena-style mayhem and the DOOM SnapMap which is a "powerful, but easy-to-use game and level editor" that lets you tinker and create whole new maps and customised gameplay.

DOOM launches today for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 worldwide.
