The audition process is underway on Star Wars: Episode VIII and in the time honoured tradition of casting news stories, we have a shortlist of actresses who could be in line for a role.

Reports this morning are that Gina Rodriguez, Tatiana Maslany and Olivia Cooke all have appointments for a "chemistry read" with John Boyega.

Listing the role as the ‘female lead’ which either doesn’t bode well for Daisy Ridley or that it’ll be a complimentary role to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens star. What’s more interesting is the potential casting of Tatiana Maslany, who, as rumours have it, was in contention for the Felicity Jones role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Meanwhile, Cooke has already been shortlisted for a role in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One.

Rian Johnson is writing and directing the second of the new Star Wars trilogy films, and Benicio Del Toro has been the subject of some other, villain-centric casting speculation. Episode VIII is scheduled to start shooting early next year ready for a May 6, 2017 release date.
