You may be perplexed at the news that director Colin Trevorrow won’t be returning for the follow up to Jurassic World, well, as it turns out, he’ll be busy shepherding another beloved childhood film franchise onto the big screen when he takes charge of Star Wars Episode IX.

Ever since J.J. Abrams announced that it’ll be one and out in terms of directing Star Wars movies (he’ll instead serve as executive producer on subsequent new trilogy instalments) fans have been anxiously awaiting news of who would be helming the remaining two.

Rian Johnson (Looper, Breaking Bad) got Episode VIII, and now it’s been confirmed by Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn that Jurassic World‘s Colin Trevorrow will be helming Episode IX.

Speaking at Disney’s D23 conference Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said: “Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw Safety Not Guaranteed,” says Kennedy. “The power of that film paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.”

Addressing his place within the Star Wars franchise, both past and present, Trevorrow said: “This is not a job or an assignment. It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists, and craftspeople.

“We’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had — a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channelling something George Lucas instilled in all of us: boundless creativity, pure invention, and hope.”

Trevorrow is certainly a great choice, he’s already delivered a movie that was both a homage to a movie held dear by audiences, all while dazzling new audiences with fresh thrills – we cannot wait to see what he does in a galaxy far, far away.
