While working the press circuit for the upcoming Spy, Jason Statham has offered a slice or two on the follow up to 2004’s Layer Cake.

The film which was based on the novel by J.J Connelly, saw Daniel Craig as an unnamed drug pusher known as XXXX, who, while attempting to retire from the business suffers something of an interesting last day at work.

A follow up has been teased since 2013 with Statham reportedly taking over the lead and now it appears as though it’ll go before the cameras this year.

Statham told Digital Spy: “JJ Connolly's written a great book called Viva La Madness, and we're taking that book and doing something great with it," Statham told Digital Spy. "He's such a talented writer... the book was incredible. I loved Layer Cake and this is [if anything] better.

"The chance to work with someone of that calibre, do something back home, it's the most exciting thing on my plate... We're doing it next year, and its full steam ahead. We're putting all the finance together, and we're off and racing."

There’s no word on whether Matthew Vaughn will return to direct but with Statham keen to get things moving, it looks likely that Layer Cake 2 will be with us sooner rather than later.
