It's been a rocky development for Keiji Inafune's spiritual successor to his much-loved Mega Man series, Mighty No. 9, and the release itself certainly hasn't been smooth sailing with all the upsetting delays. The game unlocks in about 5 hours now, is it at least a half-decent game?

Actually, 'half-decent' might be the optimum phrase considering the reviews that have been posted across the Internet so far. For the most part, the critical masses mark the game somewhere between 5-6 out of 10:

Dave Irwin of The Sixth Axis gave 6/10 described the game as having "moments of platforming bliss" and "retro music [which] hits all the right chiptune notes". At the same time, Irwin criticised the game's "somewhat cheap production values".

GameSpot's Peter Brown offered a straight 5/10 calling the game "inoffensively average" and a "compromised effort ... failing to deliver either contemporary flair or classic whimsy" in terms of the game's art-style.

Andrew Reiner from GameInformer offered 6/10 calling Mighty No. 9 a "lifeless Mega Man clone ... [which lacks the old-school charm". Additionally, Reiner criticised the sound design and soundtrack stating "over-exaggerated voice acting clashes against a surprisingly bad soundtrack that rarely [gives] the player a pronounced beat to accompany play".

Destructoid's Chris Carter offered a higher score of 6.5 saying that "if you can ignore the look of the lacklustre engine, it plays well". Unfortunately, "the combo system isn't nearly as cool as Comcept and Inti Creates thinks it is, but it [does work] because it encourages smart and swift play."

Vince Ingenito from IGN gave 5.6, calling the game "more like a second-rate imposter than a spiritual successor" to the Mega Man franchise as it "doesn't seem to have a good sense of what was fun about Mega Man, or 2D action-platformers in general".

On the other hand,  both IGN Italia and IGN Sweden gave Mighty No. 9 a score of 8/10, calling it a "great old school platformer [that] doesn't reinvent anything new" and simply calling it "a good Mega Man game" respectively.
